It’s gotten to a point where every amateur with a bit of practice and a decent PC can create porn so good it’ll make your head spin. We begin with a rather cool dude (in the 2000s, every cool guy was like this one), as he’s buying ice cream for his loving girlfriend and taking her for a ride in his convertible. Does it get any cooler than that? I didn’t think so. Anyhow, he gets a call from his best friend about that rave party, and our protagonist cleverly fakes talking to his mother, promising to come and help her, only to get rid of his chick and go to the party alone. Clever dude.

Anyhow, we get rid of our hottie and that’s when we’re greeted with a first choice. You can pick between meeting your friend and going to a party with him, or going to a couple of girlfriends of yours and taking them instead. It’s the first of numerous choices where one gives you a bad ending and takes you back to the checkpoint, and I’ll spoil just this one before leaving you to experience the rest for yourself.

In essence, if you decide to go with the girls and stand your buddy up, you get in their car and head to the party, but the car runs out of gas in the middle of the road. You’re left there stranded and that’s a game over. Be a better friend and take care of your buddies, ok? That way, you’ll get to the party in one piece, meet a bunch of different ladies, have all kinds of conversations, and do all kinds of crazy stuff. At one point, you might even get eaten by a lake monster.

The Pros and the Cons of The Game

New Year’s Rave is a balancing act of the good and the bad. No single person can give you a proper answer about whether it’s a game worth playing since it offers a unique experience for those with refined tastes. Still, you cannot but appreciate how there’s a whole team of people that worked on it. Every character that speaks and that you get to interact with features voice lines from a talented voice actor. That’s diligence and attention to detail on display.

Speaking of sound, you get a bunch of rave music all the time, and not in a bad or obnoxious way. Sure, you can mute the game if it bothers you, but it truly adds to the overall atmosphere. As weird and cliche as it sounded, at one point I felt as if I was in the middle of that rave, surrounded by all those hot, high, and horny ladies. Then there’s that animation I talked about. Whether you’re taking a smoke, dancing, speaking with a DJ, fucking, or fighting a zombie (yep, that happens as well), it’s never a dull moment with this title. Even those choices that you’re making truly alter the outcome and change the course of the whole game.

That being said, it’s hard to overlook the cons, especially if you’re a newer gamer who hasn’t been in contact with Flash titles. I implore you to give this one a go, but I don’t blame you if you find the visuals ridiculous and the animation pointless. There’s also the issue of gameplay, where you’re not really gaming. You’re merely choosing between two different options and going along for the ride. I still replayed New Year’s Rave a couple of times until I’d seen every single scene, but that might not be for everyone.
